Dear Sir,
Please accept my thanks for the loan of your papers. The selections will appear from time to time in "The Orphans Friend." Yours Respectfully,
S.M. Reed
Feb 20th 1860
"The Orphans' Friend" was the official publication of the Cayuga Asylum for Destitute Children in Auburn New York. S. Maria Reed was on the first board of managers, as named in the charter, of the Asylum (Storke 196). As a manager, she was "empowered 'to govern the children committed to their care, and prescribe the course of their instruction and management to the same extent and with the same rights as exist in the case of natural guardians;' to bind out such children 'to some suitable employment in the same manner as overseers of the poor are authorized to bind poor and indigent children,' but to see that provision is made whereby they shall be secured 'an education proper and fitting to the condition and circumstances in life of such a child, and instruction in mechanical or agricultural pursuits'" (Storke 196). The board of managers also issued this monthly paper which was intended to enlist "the sympathy and aid of the public," as well as give "information to the friends abroad of its management, and the history of the children committed to its care" (Storke 197). This letter to prior Governor Enos T Throop reveals some of the personal and political connections between the prison, poorhouse, and orphanage-- all of which involved the expanding institutionalization of social reform. - Work Type:
