- Description:
- This is a heavily damaged cast of a pitted, weathered block from a frieze of hens and roosters from Building F at Xanthos, perhaps a cult building or a tomb. The cast is broken into eight fragments, seven of these adjoining, with much of the central section of the block missing. The tail of a rooster that faces the viewer's right is visible along the left side of the block. Other details are difficult to discern owing to the state of the cast block and the indistinct features of the bird on the original. The bird is preserved just short of complete in the original, albeit in a very weathered state. The function of Building F is unknown, but it has been proposed that the building was used for cult instead of funerary purposes. The frieze of hens and roosters is attributed to Building F and thought to have run along the base of the building. Blocks from the frieze were discovered reused in a late antique wall on the acropolis at Xanthos.
