- Description:
- This is a cast of a dedicatory inscription from the base of a statue of Philonides that once stood at Olympia, as Pausanias indicates (xi.16.5). The inscription, IvO 276, reads: β[α]σιλέως Ἀλε[ξάνδρου] ἡμεροδρόμας καὶ βηματιστὴς τῆς Ἀσίας Φιλωνίδης Ζωΐτου Κρὴς Χερσονάσιος ἀνέθηκε Διὶ Ὀλυμπίοι. Philonides, son of Zotes, a native of Chersonese in Crete, and a courier and road-measurer to King Alexander in Asia, dedicated (this statue) to Olympian Zeus (Frazer, 49). The cast is broken into two large pieces.
