- Description:
- This is a fragment from a cast of a section of East IV. Preserved here are part of Dionysos' right calf and foot, the lower portion of Demeter's peplos, her foot, the leg of the stool on which she sits, and the lower half of her torch, which she holds at a forty-five degree angle in her left arm. This piece joins with ID no. 440 (Demeter). The original East IV frieze block depicts four standing men in himatia (conjectured to be eponymous heroes of Athens, dignitaries, or magistrates) and four seated gods (Hermes, Dionysos, Demeter, and Ares). East IV was cast in three separate segments by Caproni, a possible source of this and other Parthenon frieze casts owned by Cornell. Contained in this cast section were the seated Demeter and Ares, as well as the lower parts of Dionysos' legs. This fragment comes from the lower left (viewer's) corner of the cast block.
