- Description:
- This is a cast of the inscribed leg of the chair of an Archaic seated statue of Chares, ruler of Teichioussa, dedicated by him to Apollo at Didyma. The statue, housed in the British Museum, is the only extant figure of the dedicatory group with which it originally stood. It lined the Sacred Way leading from the nearby port of Panormos to the sanctuary of Apollo at Didyma, along with many other similar statues. This inscription (McCabe, Didyma 139) is located on the right (proper) front leg of the chair on which Chares is seated. It reads: Χαρῆς εἰμι ὀ Κλέσιος Τειχιόσης ἀρχός· ἄγαλμα το͂ Ἀπόλλωνος. I am Chares, Son of Kleisis, Ruler of Teichioussa. The statue belongs to Apollo.
