- Description:
- This is a damaged cast of of the Stone of Bybon, a sandstone weight inscribed in the early 6th c. BCE that was found at, and is currently housed in, Olympia. The stone, which weighs 143 kilograms (316 pounds), carries an inscription written in boustrephedon commemorating the remarkable feat of the weightlifter, Bybon. It reads: Βύβōν τἐˉτέ- ρει χερὶ ὐπερκέφαλά μ’ ὐπερεβάλετο ὀ Φόλ̣α. (IvO 717, SIG 684) Bybon, son of Phola, lifted (or threw) me over his head with one hand. The cast is broken into five pieces, three of which are represented in this record.
