Ares (Greek deity) - Image View Type:
- overall
- Image View Description:
- from front
- Measurement:
- 56 (maximum) x 47 (maximum) (centimeters, height x width)
- Description:
- This is a fragment from a larger cast of a section of East IV preserving much of the upper body of a seated Ares. His head, badly damaged in the original, is not preserved in this fragment. The god sits on a partially preserved stool, facing the viewer's left. His back is rounded and his arms are extended to clasp his raised right knee. Neither his hands nor his knee are preserved here. A bunched himation covers his waist and upper legs. This piece is broken above Ares' bared left knee. It joins with ID no. 440. East IV was cast in three separate segments by Caproni, a possible source of this and other Parthenon frieze casts owned by Cornell. If this piece comes from such a configuration, it is a fragment from the third (from the left) of these three segments.
