- Description:
- This is a damaged cast of a well-preserved marble relief of a youth with a horse and dog from Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli housed at the British Museum. The boy, facing left and nude except for the billowing chlamys fastened around his neck, wears a thin fillet in his short, wavy hair. His head and legs are shown in profile, while his muscular torso is depicted in three-quarter view. With his right hand he reaches out to hold the now-missing (in the original) metal reins of his horse, and in his left hand he holds a rod or baton up and back. He leans back to place much of his weight on his right leg in a seeming attempt to restrain his horse. The horse raises its front legs in a gallop. It has a short, bristly mane. A medium-sized, wiry dog with a small head prances behind the boy and horse. Charles Townley, who purchased this relief in the 1770s, identified the youth as Castor, but his identity remains open to discussion. The work is classicizing, recalling and perhaps inspired by the Parthenon frieze.
