- overall
- Image View Description:
- from front
- Measurement:
- ca. 73 x 45 x 120 (centimeters, height x width x diameter)
- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of the damaged fig. B from the east pediment of the Parthenon, a group of two horses from Helios' (east pediment fig. A) chariot. The horses emerge from the surface of their plinth at the level of their lower necks. The horse on the left (viewer's) has fared better than its companion on the right (in the original). The left horse raises its head, twisting and leaning out towards the viewer. Its somewhat battered head is largely intact, although it is missing its lower jaw and has suffered damage to its left ear. The horse on the right raises its head and faces forward. It is missing most of its face. The horses, along with two others in front of them and now in the Acropolis museum, were located at the far left of the pediment along with their driver, Helios, whose head and arms emerged from the contiguous plinth in the pediment's left angle. The group represented the rising sun.
