- Description:
- This is a cast of the back face (side B) of a marble stele known as the Decree(s) of Kallias, produced in Athens, probably in 434/3 BCE. It is housed in the Louvre. The decree, IG I³ 52 and Meiggs and Lewis no. 58, is concerned with repaying debts to the treasuries of other Attic deities, with the consolidation of other Attic treasury holdings on the Athenian Acropolis, and with the financing of building projects on the Acropolis. The date of the decree(s) and the relationship of the text of sides A and B to each other have been the subject of scholarly debate. Side B of the original was altered when the stele was incorporated into a Christian altar, with several letters lost as the sides were cut at angles and a channels was cut into the face. This cast is in poor condition, missing fragments and significant sections of its surface. It seems likely that, but is unknown whether, Cornell had a cast of the front face (side A) of this stele.
