- Description:
- This is a cast of the Roman rustic calendar stone in Naples known as the Cippus Colotianus. It is a short, four sided, Latin-inscribed pillar with relief decoration that records in capital letters the twelve months of the year, the number of days and hours in the days of each month, the sun's position and the tutelary deity associated with that month, and important festivals and agricultural undertakings. Each of the four faces contains three columns, each of which records the information for one month. At the top of each column is an image of the zodiac sign associated with that month rendered in relief. The stone was discovered in the gardens of Angelo Colocci, an Italian humanist and papal secretary, in 1550.
