- Description:
- This is a cast of a statuette of a seated female figure, perhaps the muse Erato, but labeled in Greek "EUMOUSIA". The original, in the British Museum, is heavily restored from a Roman era torso. Restorations include the head, arms, and much of the instrument. The figure is fully draped and sits with her right foot slightly forward. She supports a kithara with her left arm and hand and turns her head to the left. Her hair is pulled back and she wears a floral wreath above her forehead. The cast is in poor and unstable condition, with the face chipped off and revealing the fabric support beneath, the right arm missing, the top of the kithara broken away to reveal its metal supports, and extensive chipping at the base. The inscription, painted in with red paint, is largely chipped away. At present (10/22/2015), the record for two similar objects in the British Museum online catalog appear to be conflated (1805,0703.455 and 1805,0703.37).
