- Description:
- This is a cast of a weathered Archaic relief of dancing women and girls from Teichioussa. It is housed in the British Museum. Preserved in the original are part or all of seven figures, with the incomplete figures at either end of the block indicating that this was an element of a continuous frieze. Three girls and two women are mostly preserved here. Facing the viewer's right, the figures are all depicted between profile and three-quarter views and alternate between women and girls. They move and lean forward with left legs advanced. The women wear diaphanous chitons with mantles, the girls hold flowers in their hands and wear the chitons alone. All figures have long hair with waves indicated by characteristically archaic horizontal rows, and each wears a diadem. Eyes are large and almond-shaped, noses are short and rounded. The top corners of the block are damaged in the original and have been slightly filled in this cast.
