- Description:
- This is a cast of a relief showing a cavalryman walking alongside a horse from the Apadana at Persepolis. The original is housed in the British Museum. The face, front of the head, and right hand are all that remain of the groom, who stands in the foreground of this composition facing right (viewer's). He is depicted in Median dress wearing a rounded headdress with a decorative band at the forehead, a circular earring, and a garment of which the long sleeve is visible at his right wrist. His eye is large and almond shaped, his nose is small and hooked. He has a pointed beard with globular curls. In his right hand he holds the reins of his stocky horse, who stands just shorter than the groom. The horse's shoulders and back of neck are preserved here with a closely cropped, bristling mane at the upper neck and five thick, flat-lying locks just above the shoulder. The original object was cut or broken from a wall in the Apadana in an irregular shape. This cast was filled in to create straight sides along the viewer's left and top edges. The right side was left irregular.
