- Description:
- This is a cast of a statue known as the Archaistic Dancer from Pergamon, housed in Berlin. The statue was excavated from the Attalid palace complex at Pergamon in 1886. The figure is posed as if dancing, standing on straightened legs with her left leg advanced. She turns her head to her right, raises her now-missing right arm, and pulls up her drapery with her now-missing left hand. Her face is small and narrow with classicizing features. She has full, wavy hair that is parted in the middle, rolled on the sides, and pulled into a chignon in the back. Her drapery is heavy and multi-layered, falling along her chest in a pattern reminiscent of Archaic korai. The sculptural style is eclectic, combining Hellenistic, Classical, and Archaic elements. The right arm is missing below the shoulder in the original, as is the left hand. The nose is also mostly chipped away on the original and the left (proper) chin, cheek, and brow have also sustained significant chipping. The cast is damaged at the base so that the feet, part of the plinth, and some sections of drapery are missing. Additional sections of drapery are missing at the back of the cast. It is worth noting that this cast was acquired by Cornell within ten years of the excavation of this statue at Pergamon.
