- Description:
- This is a partial cast (bust only) of a statue of Zeus Ammon from Pergamon that is housed in Istanbul. The god is bare-chested with a himation slung over his left shoulder. He turns his head to his right. His eyes are large and almond-shaped, his nose is broken away (in the original), his full lips are slightly parted, and his fleshy forehead is divided horizontally by a prominent wrinkle. Short, full, wavy hair and a full beard surround his face. The locks of each are well-articulated, almost patterned. Squared holes above the temples on either side of the head were intended for attached ram's horns (missing in the original), a characteristic feature of the syncretic Greco-Egyptian deity who had a famous oracular shrine in the Siwa Oasis of the Egyptian/Libyan desert.
