- Description:
- This is a damaged cast of a three-sided marble tripod base in the Borghese Collection of the Louvre, known commonly as the Borghese Altar. Each of the faces is separated into two registers and is generally trapezoidal, flaring at the lower register. On the smaller, upper register of each side, four of the twelve Olympian deities stand holding identifying attributes. They are posed frontally, in three-quarter view, or in profile, all turn their heads to profile, and all are arranged in facing pairs. On each of the larger, lower registers stand three female deities with identifying attributes or characteristics: the Charites (Graces), the Horai (Seasons), and the Moirai (Fates). The drapery of all figures falls in folds mimicking both the High Classical and Archaic styles. Figures are posed relatively stiffly.
