- from front
- Measurement:
- ca. 103 x 223 (centimeters, height x width)
- Description:
- This is a relatively well-preserved cast of figs. L and M from the east pediment of the Parthenon, a group of two draped female figures, one sitting on a himation-covered rock and the other reclining against the first. The identity of fig. L, perhaps Dione or Artemis, remains debated. Fig. M is identified as Aphrodite with some certainty. In the original both figures are missing their heads and parts of their arms and feet. Fig. L, in a short-sleeved, belted chiton with a himation over her lap, sits with her torso in an almost frontal position and her sharply bent legs in three-quarter view to the right (viewer's). Aphrodite props herself on her right elbow, which rests on fig. L's lap, incompletely turning her body towards the viewer. Her short-sleeved, belted chiton slips off of her right shoulder and a himation twists around her legs. Her drapery is intricately rendered.
