- Description:
- This is a cast of a composite Roman copy of a statue known as the diskobolos (discobolus), a late 5th c. BCE bronze statue attributed to Naukydes of Argos. The work depicts a standing, nude athlete and is alternately (and more aptly) referred to as the diskophoros (discophorus) to avoid confusion with the more famous diskobolos of Myron (see ID no. 670), an athlete depicted in the act of throwing. The head, here as in the original, does not belong with the body but was found with it. The athlete stands placing his weight on his left leg with his right leg slightly advanced and forward. A knotty tree trunk rises behind his left leg. His right arm is bent forward and he turns his head to his right to look down at his right hand. He holds a discus facing front in his lowered left hand. The diskobolos' short, curly hair is banded by a narrow fillet. His facial features are idealized. The right arm of this cast is broken, but the object is in otherwise relatively good condition. The brackets in place on the original are not included in this cast. The diskobolos of Naukydes exists in several copies, including ones in the Louvre (Ma 89), Capitoline Museum (no. 1865), and British Museum (no. 1882,0422.1 or 1753). Cornell holds a second copy of this cast (ID no. 189).
