- Description:
- This is a cast of a statue of a standing female figure restored as the muse Urania. It is housed in Berlin. The figure, draped in a floor-length chiton and a himation that wraps over her left shoulder, stands placing her weight on her straightened right leg with her left leg bent. She turns her head to her left and casts her calm glance up. Her wavy hair is parted in the middle and pulled back. In her left hand she holds a globe up at hip level and in her right she holds a now-missing (in the original) stylus at waist level. The original is heavily restored, including the attributes, which calls into question the original identity of the figure represented here. The statue, from the so-called Lycomedes Group, a group statues early on thought to represent Achilles with the daughters of Lycomedes, was among the the collection of Melchior de Polignac in the 18th c. The collection was bought by Frederick the Great after Polignac's death in 1742.
