- Description:
- This is a fragmentary cast of North XLIII, depicting riders moving towards the viewer's left. The major fragments pictured here contain parts of three of the four horsemen found on the original block. The first horseman, fig. 118, wears a helmet and casts his gaze down. A chlamys drapes over his left forearm, which is bent to hold the reins of his horse. The horse he rides is largely contained in North XLII. Fig. 119 wears an alopeke (fox-skin cap) and looks ahead. Aside from a small part of his draped shoulders, his body is missing from below the chin here. His horse, most of whose body is obscured by the overlapping horse ridden by fig. 120, gallops forward with both legs raised. Fig. 120 looks forward with head in profile, but he twists his back into a three-quarter pose. His body is missing from the small of his back down in this cast. With his left arm, the lower portion of which is broken away, he holds the reins of his horse, while his right arm is raised and bent up behind him. His horse bends its head towards the ground and raises both front legs. The major part of its body is missing in this fragment. Fig. 121, badly damaged in the original, is not preserved in this fragment. The head of his horse is partially obscured by the raised arm of fig. 120.
