- This is an intact cast of a segment of East IV, which was made in three separate portions by Caproni, a possible source of this and other Parthenon frieze casts owned by Cornell. Here, Hermes (fig. 24) and Dionysos (fig. 25) lean against each other on stools. Hermes is shown in profile, with his bared torso turned only slightly towards the viewer. The god faces left (viewer's), resting his arms on his draped lap, and a petasos, his traveler's hat, sits on his thigh. Dionysos leans against Hermes' back, resting his right arm on Hermes' shoulder. His torso, also bared, is turned frontally. A himation is heavily bunched at the god's waist, and his lower legs are contained in a separate cast block. His left arm is raised and bent up at the elbow at a forty-five degree angle. At the left of the block, a bearded man (fig. 23) in himation leans on his staff with his back to the gods. He is shown at a smaller scale than the gods and is one of four similarly disposed men on the original block. These men are are conjectured to be eponymous heroes of Athens, dignitaries, or magistrates. The heads of all figures contained in this cast block have been damaged or chiseled away in the original.
