- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of a slab from the lesser podium frieze of the Nereid Monument at Xanthos showing several soldiers in combat in front of a city wall. At the left (viewer's) edge of the block two overlapping, heavily-damaged (in the original) archers face right and stand side by side poised to shoot. Two more soldiers stand in front of the archers, also side by side and overlapping each other. These hold shields along their left sides (the shields' interiors are visible), place their weight on their forward right legs, and hold now-missing weapons in their right hands. Facing them and at the center of the slab, two warriors stand in front of and defend a city wall. They hold shields on their left sides (the shields' exteriors are visible), place their weight on their forward right legs, and hold stones in raised right hands. City walls with rounded merlons are depicted on three levels on the right side of the slab. Several people, mostly helmeted, holding shields, and poised to throw rocks, are visible peeking above the walls.
