- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of metope South 4, a relatively well-preserved original, showing a hydria-wielding centaur vanquishing a Lapith man. The centaur, facing towards the viewer's left, holds a large hydria behind his head with both hands, twisting his torso slightly towards the viewer. He looks down at the Lapith he is about to strike. The Lapith crouches in three-quarter view in the left corner of the block. He looks up and holds his shield up with his raised left arm so that its concave inside is visible. Here, as in the original, all of the legs of the centaur are badly damaged or missing, most of its tail and parts of both arms are missing. The Lapith is lacking his right arm from above the elbow and his right leg. This cast restores the heads of the centaur and Lapith, which are housed in the National Museum in Copenhagen.
