- Description:
- This is a cast of an under life-size statue of a seated female figure restored as the muse Urania. It was discovered in the Villa of Cassius at Tivoli and is housed in the Vatican Museums. The figure sits on a rock with her sandalled left foot advanced holding a stylus in her right hand up to a globe in her left. She wears a long, sleeveless chiton that is belted below her breasts and falls in heavy folds to the ground. The garment has slipped from her lowered left shoulder and rests on her upper arm. With a calm expression, she looks down at the globe. Her wavy hair is pulled back into a small chignon and banded by a headdress comprised of a narrow fillet with a tall double feather at the front. The head is ancient but does not belong with the body. The work is otherwise heavily restored, thereby calling into question the original identity of the figure represented here.
