Iris (Greek deity) - Image View Type:
- overall
- Image View Description:
- from front
- Measurement:
- 133 x 100 (maximum) (centimeters, height x width)
- Description:
- This is a generally well-preserved cast of fig. N from the west pediment of the Parthenon, a draped female torso with upper legs. The figure, in a clinging, short, belted chiton, is identified as the messenger goddess, Iris, in flight. She is missing her head, arms, and lower legs in the original. Her right leg is forward, her left leg is back as if striding, and her torso is turned toward the viewer. A female head in the Louvre (Ma 740), known commonly as the Laborde head, might belong with fig. N. Despite its seeming attribution to the east pediment in the Sage Collection catalogue (p. 36), this figure is now generally restored in the west pediment.
