- Description:
- This is a cast of a relief of two cavalrymen in identical poses from the Apadana at Persepolis. The original is housed in the British Museum. The figures, facing left (viewer's), are depicted in Median dress, with rounded headdresses and long-sleeved garments. Both have almond-shaped eyes, small, hooked noses, and pointed beards. The hair of both and the beard of the figure at the left are rendered in tight, globular curls. Each groom supports a saddle blanket with his left hand and holds a whip in his lowered right hand. The rough chiseling on the right half of the slab and several missing details from the groom at the right demonstrate that the original relief was never completed. The original object was cut or broken from a wall in the Apadana in an irregular shape. This cast was filled in to create a rectangle.
