- Description:
- This is a cast of the viewer's right half of a relief-decorated limestone slab from building G at Xanthos, showing a boar running left. The slab, intact in the original, was cast in two parts (see ID no. 98 for the left half). The hind parts of the boar are contained on this half of the block. The animal runs with his back legs extended, hooves to the ground. The termination of his bristly mane can be seen along his back at the left side of the slab. His tail bends out and down behind him and thickens at the end. Large testicles are visible just below the tail. The function of Building G is unknown, but it has been proposed that the building was used for cult instead of funerary purposes. This block formed part of an animal frieze that is believed to have been situated at the top of the podium on which the building stood. It was discovered reused in a late antique wall on the acropolis at Xanthos.
