- Description:
- This is a generally well-preserved cast of a damaged slab from the lesser podium frieze of the Nereid Monument at Xanthos, a tomb built for the Lycian ruler Erbinna, showing the storming of a city wall. Three helmeted soldiers holding shields scale a ladder propped against a wall, while two soldiers kneel against the wall beneath the ladder at the bottom left corner of the slab. They look up and raise their arms. Behind the three soldiers who make their way up the ladder, another is shown rushing towards the ladder with his shield, while two additional soldiers kneel on the ground behind him, largely obscured by their shields. Another soldier is depicted in the background beyond the kneeling soldiers. He faces right and holds his left arm up, as if communicating with others who face him.
