- Description:
- This is a cast of the damaged grave stele of Philis from Thasos, housed at the Louvre. The deceased, shown in profile facing the viewer's right, is seated on a stool with worked legs and rests her feet on a footstool. She is fully draped in a sleeved chiton and himation. She looks down calmly at the small chest she holds with her left hand and pulls what seems to be a strip of fabric from the box with her right hand. Her features are classicizing: she has heavy-lidded eyes, a straight nose, full lips, and a fleshy chin. Her hair has been drawn up into a sakkos, with curly locks exposed at the forehead and temples and a small tuft of hair protruding at the back of the headdress. The top front of the head has been chipped away in the original. The composition is framed within a naiskos that is missing its pediment (in the original). Along the architrave above the figure's head an inscription, IG XII.8 401, reads, "Philis daughter of Kleomedes". The original was reassembled from several pieces, the crack lines of which are preserved in this cast.
