- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of a slab from the greater podium frieze of the Nereid Monument at Xanthos, a tomb built for the Lycian ruler Erbinna, showing two soldiers on foot and one on horseback. At the viewer's left a foot soldier, nude except for his crested helmet, is shown from behind. He holds a round shield on his left side and lunges leftward with a raised right hand. In the center of the scene a warrior on a rearing horse twists his body between profile and frontal views. His face is chipped away in the original. He wears a flowing chlamys, holds his right arm up and back, and grasps his horse's reins with his left hand. He engages in combat with the foot soldier at the right side of the frame who faces him. That soldier wears a short, belted chiton and crested helmet. He stands with his left leg forward and right leg back, holds a shield on his left side, and draws his right arm back. The three warriors apparently all held weapons, probably added in paint on the original.
