- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of a section of East V showing three figures from the Peplos Scene, the focal image of the east frieze. Fig. 33, a woman draped in a chiton and himation, faces the viewer's left. Her head is shown in profile while her body is turned between profile and three-quarter views. She stands facing fig. 32, who is not pictured here but is contained in the contiguous block, and appears to accept a stool carried by the girl. Fig. 34 is a bearded man draped in a long, short-sleeved, unbelted chiton who stands in a three-quarter pose. He holds up or folds a textile, identified as the peplos for Athena, with both hands and bows his head slightly to look at it. A child of insecure sex but most often identified as a boy, fig. 35, stands to the man's right and is shown in profile. The child's long drapery is open at the back to reveal the buttocks. He or she helps with the peplos and looks up at the cloth or man. Much debate surrounds the identification of the subject of the central scene and the figures in it. Fig. 33 has most widely been identified as the priestess of Athena Polias, fig. 34 as the archon basileus, and fig. 35 is often identified as a temple attendant.
