- Description:
- This is a cast of a corner relief with figures on two sides from the Apadana at Persepolis. The original is housed in the British Museum. On one side, a figure, facing right (viewer's), is depicted in Persian dress, with a high, squared, pleated headdress and long-sleeved garment. He has large, almond-shaped eyes, a small, hooked nose, and hair and beard that are depicted in rows of tight, globular curls. The guard holds a spear upright with his right hand and crosses his left hand over his forearm. He steps forward with his right leg. On the other face of the corner block, a guard with similar features and dress faces left. He holds a spear upright in front of him with both hands and wears a quiver over his left shoulder. The block was cut away from its original position above this guard's feet. The cast is preserved in several pieces. The right-facing guard is complete here, although there is a large crack at shoulder level. Much of the left-facing guard has been broken away so that his head and the back part of his body are no longer attached to the upright cast.
