- Description:
- This is a cast of a section of East V showing part of the Peplos Scene, the focal image of the east frieze. Here, two girls draped in chitons and himatia carry what have commonly been identified as stools (diphroi) on their heads. The first of these, fig. 31, stands facing front. She bends her right arm up to steady or support the stool on her head, and carries an insecurely identified item in her left hand, conjecturally a footstool or a basket. Fig. 32 faces to the viewer's right. Her head is in profile, while her body is positioned between a profile and three-quarter view. She rests her weight on her left leg and bends her left arm up to hold onto the stool poised on her head. Fig. 32 faces a woman (fig. 33), who is not included here but can be found on the contiguous cast block, who appears to accept the stool from her. Much debate surrounds the identification of the subject of the central scene and the figures in it. These two figures have been identified variously but most frequently as the arrephoroi, young girls chosen in the ritual service of Athena Polias.
