- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of a section of East VII showing two women facing towards the viewer's left and two men facing right. The women, primarily in profile, are heavily draped in peplos and himation. Each of the men, in three-quarter view and missing his head, wears a himation with partially bared chest. Fig. 49, a male, faces the two women (figs. 50 and 51) and holds at chest level a kanoun (reed basket), perhaps having just accepted it from the approaching women. Fig. 51 overlaps fig. 50. Both hold their arms at their sides and step forward with their right legs. Fig. 52 turns towards the next group of approaching women, who are contained in the contiguous cast block. He holds his left arm at hip level and seems to gesture or point with his hand. His right arm is at his side and he held an object in his right hand, as evidence by drill holes in the original. East VII underwent restorations ca. 1820, which included significant recutting of the the stone. In the current state of the original of this block, the heads of figs. 50 and 51 are heavily damaged. This cast, then, probably preserves some of the 19th century restoration work.
