- Description:
- This is a cast, broken away at the far left but otherwise decently preserved, of a damaged slab from the lesser podium frieze of the Nereid Monument at Xanthos, a tomb built for the Lycian ruler Erbinna. It shows nine soldiers marching towards the viewer's left. The first of these, at the far left side of the block, is heavily damaged in the original so that all that remains of him is a small amount of his garment. The next six from the left carry shields that vary in size. The third figure from the left is shown with his torso facing front and his head turned to look behind him and the fifth figure turns his head to look back while raising his right arm. The others of these shield-bearers are shown in profile. The final two figures are wrapped in short cloaks and are posed in three-quarter view, one with his back toward the viewer and the other with his front.
