- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of a slab from the lesser podium frieze of the Nereid Monument at Xanthos, a tomb built for the Lycian ruler Erbinna, showing eight overlapping soldiers. Seven of these march toward the viewer's left, while the eighth, who holds his right arm up, has turned to face the opposite direction, perhaps to command soldiers behind this group. Four of the soldiers hold shields, the five whose heads are preserved in the original wear helmets. The sixth soldier from the left holds his arm out to point ahead. They all wear drapery that falls to just above their knees.
