- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of a heavily damaged slab from the lesser podium frieze of the Nereid Monument at Xanthos, a tomb built for the Lycian ruler Erbinna, showing six soldiers, all of them poorly preserved in the original. At the viewer's left side of the slab, a figure crouches facing left with his shield in front of him. Next, a helmeted figure facing toward the viewer's right stands with his shield along his left side, which is largely obscured by his body, and his right arm in the air. He is the best preserved figure here. To the right, another soldier, in profile facing left, walks left. A figure faces forward, and another faces and walks left. Both wear helmets. A sixth figure is visible at the right edge of the block.
Subsequent to the making of this cast, several additional elements of this relief slab--specifically the helmeted heads and parts of the torsos of the three central figures--were rejoined to the original.
