- Description:
- This is a generally well-preserved cast of a slab from the lesser podium frieze of the Nereid Monument at Xanthos, a tomb built for the Lycian ruler Erbinna, showing six helmeted figures in a battle scene. At the viewer's left side of the slab, a bearded man in a chiton and cuirass faces and runs left with a shield at his side and his right arm raised in the air. To the right, a figure in a belted chiton who is shown in an almost frontal pose twists his torso toward the viewer's right and holds his right arm across his chest to draw a bow. Next, a figure in a belted chiton who is depicted almost frontally walks toward the left alongside a wounded compatriot, helping to support him. The wounded soldier, in a chiton and cuirass, is the foregrounded member of the pair. He holds a shield along his left side and lowers his head. Both wear belted chitons. To the right, two overlapping soldiers face and move right. They are shown in three-quarter view and each wears a belted chiton and holds a shield along his left side. One wears a chlamys around his neck that billows behind him. They raise their right arms, probably to throw a spear.
