- Description:
- This is a well-preserved cast of a poorly preserved slab from the lesser podium frieze of the Nereid Monument at Xanthos, a tomb built for the Lycian ruler Erbinna, showing six soldiers in two groups of three engaged in battle, along with a possible seventh figure. At the viewer's left side of the block are three soldiers in in flowing belted chitons moving left. The first two are helmeted and have their backs turned towards the viewer. They hold shields in front of them. The third in this group is very poorly preserved. A fallen figure might lie at the feet of the first soldier. A second set of three figures occupies the right side of the block. The first of these, poorly preserved in the original and in a flowing belted chiton, rushes toward the right to defend a downed compatriot to the right. The wounded soldier, apparently nude, is at his knees facing front. He holds a shield on his left arm. To the right, a soldier in a helmet, chiton, and cuirass attacks. His right arm is raised, he holds a shield on his left side, and he is shown in three-quarter view.
