- A remarkable two-sheet religious chart, intended to further Shaker education. It combines - among other things - maps of Europe, North Africa and the biblical Near East; a detailed timeline of biblical genealogy and events; a summary of the Book of Genesis; details about sacrificial offerings; biblical references to Christ's miracles, his Parables and the Messiah; and "Names and References to Character, Power and Influence upon Mankind, of the Devil, as Recorded in the Books of the Old and New Testaments." An inset map gives detail on the Holy Land and shows the path of Moses through the desert - as well as the path of the 19th century Suez Canal and Egyptian rail lines.
Skeen was a retired Louisville businessman and student of history. He was apparently commissioned to prepare the Chart by Brother Alonzo Hollister of the Shaker community at Mount Lebanon, New York, whose "goal was to demonstrate the continuity of Shaker theology with Scripture, and in so doing both attract new members and strengthen the commitment of existing Shakers." Buehler, Michael, "An extraordinary but mysterious Shaker image," https://bostonraremaps.com/inventory/shaker-map-jacob-skeen, accessed July 23, 2020 (with extensive additional information about Skeen and Hollister). There is said to be a 64-page explanation of the chart by Skeen in the Shaker Museum and Library in Old Chatham, NY. Ibid. See also https://www.raremaps.com/gallery/detail/56521, accessed July 23, 2020.
The use of illustrated maps to communicate and reinforce religious beliefs dates to medieval mappamundi and the earliest printed maps; see Notes for ID #1001.
It is also interesting to compare the Shaker map by Skeen with an Anglican map prepared some two centuries earlier, Joseph Moxon's "A Map of the Earth and how after the Flood it was Divided among the Sons of Noah" (1681), ID #1012. Where Moxon's most important lessons were communicated mostly by illustrations, Skeen primarily uses text, providing more information (and appropriate to two centuries of growing literacy).
This is an electronically joined composite version of the two sheets
for the unjoined images, see ID #2085.01-.02.
