- Notes:
- This anti-slavery map was published in 1837, before the annexation of Texas. The image at the top of the page is the seal of the Republic of Mexico, showing the "Cap of Liberty" representing the absence of slavery. The map shows the U.S. slave states in black, with black-and-white shading representing the threatened spread of slavery into Texas and the western territories (and even into Mexico). Below the map is a quote from Lafayette: "Slavery is a dark spot on the face of the nation." The American eagle is colored half white, half black. Note that the Gulf and Atlantic shoreline is largely shaded grey, adding to the impression of the scope of slavery. This map was reproduced in other similar publications by Ames at least through 1847; see ID ## 1053, 2051.
Julius Rubens Ames was an accomplished artist and ardent abolitionist who died of tuberculosis in 1850, at age 49. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=128137961&ref=acom, accessed January 27, 2015. "Liberty" is a collection of poems, speeches and other writings by and about scores of individuals and institutions opposed to slavery, including (among others) religious figures, the founding fathers, British poets, prominent women, the press and the Bible.
