- Description:
- "Frances A Johnston joined the Department of Food and Nutrition at Cornell in 1946 as an associate professor and for the next 19 years, contributed greatly to the development of an outstanding research program at Cornell. Her research focused on iron requirements of young children, adolescents and young adults. She also studied the effect of adaptation to long-term low-calcium intakes on human calcium requirements. Frances developed new and improved on existing procedures regarding working with human subjects with respect to study conduct as well as the analytical procedures involved. Frances received the Borden Award from the American Home Economics Association for her outstanding research in nutrition and was a member of several professional societies as well as honorary societies. At the time of her retirement in 1965, she was made a professor emerita. She became one of the principal organizers of the Meals on Wheels program, a joint project involving the Tompkins County Health Department, the hospital dietary department, and local churches who supplied the volunteers. The program was effectively instituted in 1967 and is still in operation in much the same way today. She established the NutritionResearch Grant in 1950, made generous donations to the Division of Nutritional Sciences and established a major trust for the benefit of the University, for which she was honored in 1982. A scholarship was named in her honor in 1980 by the America Association of University Women."
