The courtier ahead of Napoleon carries a freedom tree bearing the inscription Libery, Equality, Fraternity and topped with a phrygian cap -- all of which are symbols of the French Republic; the second one carries a crown and three scepters : Napoleon is seen as both the heir of the Revolution and as a despot.
