- Description:
- "Never yet share of truth was vainly set/ In the world's wide fallow/ After hands shall sow the seed/ After hands from hill and mead/ Reap the harvest yellow." From the narrative poem Barclay of Ury, by John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892). There is a mystery here. During the construction of the building, 1932, when this inscription was placed over the door, the architect was surprised, he had had no knowledge of any plans for an inscription and no one offered to explain its presence. It was the discovery of this memorabilis that inspired the conversion and update of Elizabeth Baker Wells's book, Contributions to Cornell History: Portraits, Memorabilia Plaques and artists", to this database
