- Description:
- This is a cast of a slab from the Ionic frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai showing a scene of battle between Lapiths and Centaurs. At the viewer's left of the block a Lapith man, shown primarily frontally and nude except for the chlamys billowing behind him, braces himself on his bent right leg and holds a shield out to the right. His head is missing in the original. To the right, a Centaur lies crumpled on the ground, face down. A feline skin rests on his back. Above and to the right is a grappling Lapith and Centaur pair. The Centaur holds the Lapith and bites his neck. The Lapith, nude and facing front, is shown in the act of reaching down to stab the Cenatur's horse chest with a large knife or sword. The Centaur, whose body is shown at the center of the slab, bucks back with his hind legs in the air. The west and north sections of the frieze were devoted to scenes of Centaurs battling Lapiths. Casts of slabs from the interior frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai are installed in the common spaces at the top (second floor) of the main stairwells in both the north and south wings of Goldwin Smith Hall.
