- Description:
- This is a cast of a slab from the Ionic frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai showing a scene of battle between two Lapith men and two Centaurs. At the left of the block a Lapith, depicted in three-quarter view and nude except for the chlamys that billows behind him, moves left dragging a downed Centaur by the hair. The Lapith's head is missing in the original. The body of the Centaur, who is bearded and wears an animal skin around his neck, is at the ground. He reaches up in an attempt to loosen the Lapith's hold on his hair. Another Lapith, shown primarily in frontal view, attacks the Centaur from behind. He kneels on the Centaur with his right leg, pushing the half-human beast to the ground. Holding a shield on his left side, he lifts his right arm up and behind his head to strike a blow. A second Centaur, bearded and with a flowing animal skin around his neck, rides in to aid the first. With his right hand he grabs the right arm of the Lapith to hinder the attack on his fellow Centaur. With his left hand, the Centaur grabs the Lapith's shield. The west and north sections of the frieze were devoted to scenes of Centaurs battling Lapiths. Casts of slabs from the interior frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai are installed in the common spaces at the top (second floor) of the main stairwells in both the north and south wings of Goldwin Smith Hall.
