- Description:
- This is a cast of a slab from the Ionic frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai showing struggles between two Lapiths and two Centaurs. On the viewer's left side of the block, a bearded Centaur with bushy hair gallops to the left carrying off a Lapith woman. His face, largely chipped away in the original, is turned to frontal and his torso to three-quarters. The Lapith he carries, in a belted chiton with a billowing garment over her right arm, looks right and reaches out behind her with her right arm for help. Her torso is shown in three-quarter view and her face is almost frontal. On the right half of the block, a Lapith man struggles with a Centaur who has grabbed him from behind around the neck and at the groin. The Lapith is shown frontally with his head in profile looking right. His left arm is around the neck of the Centaur and he appears ready to strike the beast with his right fist. The Centaur is heavily damaged in the original. The west and north sections of the frieze were devoted to scenes of Centaurs battling Lapiths. Casts of slabs from the interior frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai are installed in the common spaces at the top (second floor) of the main stairwells in both the north and south wings of Goldwin Smith Hall.
