- Description:
- This is a cast of a slab from the Ionic frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai showing a scene of battle between two Lapith men and two Centaurs. At the viewer's left a Centaur, whose torso is shown in three-quarter view, charges the Lapith to the right. The Centaur wears a flowing animal skin around his left arm. The Lapith to the right, nude except for the garment draped over his left thigh, is shown in three-quarter view with his head in profile looking left. He leans right on his bent left leg and grabs ahold of the Centaur's left front horse leg. To the right, a Lapith, nude except for the chlamys around his neck, pins down and kneels upon a Centaur with his left leg. With his left hand he pins the Centaur's right arm behind the Centaur's back and with his right hand he grasps and pulls the Centaur's hair. The Lapith is depicted between frontal and three-quarter views. The horse body of the Centaur, whose torso and head are in three-quarter view, is at the ground. The west and north sections of the frieze were devoted to scenes of Centaurs battling Lapiths. Casts of slabs from the interior frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai are installed in the common spaces at the top (second floor) of the main stairwells in both the north and south wings of Goldwin Smith Hall.
