- Description:
- This is a cast of the female head, known as the Schöner Kopf, discovered in a cistern southeast of the Great Altar at Pergamon and housed in Berlin. The youthful woman or goddess tilts her head slightly to her left and looks ahead or perhaps a bit upwards with deep-set eyes. Her nose is heavily damaged in the original and her lips are parted. Her skin appears soft, her chin is full and fleshy. Wavy hair is banded at the top of the head with a thick fillet and pulled back loosely into a bun. The original is broken at the neck. In addition to the battered nose, damage includes minor chipping on the face and more extensive chipping on areas of the hair. The hair on the right side of the head is broken or sliced away on the original and three drill holes appear there, perhaps from now-missing ancient repairs.
